  • John O'Neill (born 1836 approx) and Catherine Boyle (born 1842 approx) are shown as having married in the Drumaul diocese. The original document is described as 'mutilated'. However, from what I can read, their marriage took place between June 1859 and April 1861. The witnesses were David or Daniel McCashion and Hannah Boyle.

Catherine gave birth to their son, Hugh, in 1861. The family are listed as living in Randalstown, Co. Antrim but no address is specified although another document is showing Drumaul House. There are 'sponsors' listed on Hugh's christening record and they are John and Bridget Boyle.

In either 1861 or 1862 the family came over to England and are listed as living in Tebay, Westmorland (now Cumbria) and they continued to expand their family. John and his sons (and subsequent male ancestors) are all listed as working on the railways in one role or another.

I have not been successful in finding out anything about John and Catherine's parents or any other family members. I know that O'Neill is a common name in the Randalstown area so this has complicated my search further.

  • You mention that Daniel McCashion was a witness to the marriage between John O’Neill & Catherine Boyle. McCashion is not a particularly common name in the Randalstown area. There’s a mention of a Daniel McCashion here, whose daughter Elizabeth married in Randalstown chapel in 1871 (the same chapel that married John & Catherine):

Daniel farmed in Sharvogues which is just on the edge of Randalstown. I also see marriages for Daniels sons Andrew, John, Andrew & Neil. John’s in 1872 mentions his father was dead, and so that points to a death on 12.12.1867 aged 74.

Andrew was still farming there in 1901 with wife Sarah (who was 30 when they married in 1868) having knocked a year or tow off her age:

  • At the time of his marriage to Catherine Boyle in 1861, John O’Neill’s Home address was listed simply as Crebilly. This will have been the townland about 11 miles from Randalstown. Cannot find any more information than that.
