John McGoogan immigrated to Canada from Antrim along with his brother William and a relative, possibly his father, Andrew. In 1851, he was living in Hamilton, Ontario. He married Mary Dunn. His first son, William John, was born in Hamilton on May 9, 1854. His second son, Andrew, was born in 1856. His daughter, Mary Ann, was born in 1861 and another son, James, was born on August 15, 1865. John and his family emigrated to St. Louis, MO in the United States around 1875. John died in St. Louis on April 18, 1881 and his wife Mary died Oct 30, 1882. I don't know where in Ireland Mary was from but I would love to know. I am continuing to look!

Hi, Deb!
Our ancestors could be related! We have many first names in common. McGoogan is a rare name. I have only found one other family with the name. My gg granddfather, John McGoogan (1821-1881), his brother William (1822-1892, and their father Andrew 1780-1864.all born in Antrim, left Ireland and show up in Ontario, Canada by 1851. John and his wife, Mary Dunn, left Canada and arrived in St. Louis, Mo about 1875. John and Mary had four children, William John, my g grandfather, Andrew, Mary Ann ( Molly) and James. John's brother, William, stayed in Canada and married a May or Mary. William John and his wife, Maggie Graham, were my great grandparents. Their son, John, my grandfather, would tell me stories about the family. He said the name was spelled differently in Ireland. I hope this isn't too confusing! Where did your ancestors emigrate to?
It was good to hear from you!

Hi Lynn.
My great-grandmother Rachel McGoogan went to Saint Paul Minnesota in 1880-something. Got married once or twice, had a daughter and then took her to be raised in Bushmills by her grandparents. I think her spouses died. In 1893/4 with her sister, Rachel returned to the US to Philadelphia where she married my great-grandfather Robert Harvey and they had 2 sons there. In 1908 the whole family moved to Vancouver British Columbia. Throughout their lifetimes all of them remained in the Vancouver/Vancouver Island area. My great-grandfather Robert came to Vancouver after his brother moved his family from Philadelphia to Vancouver.
The variations of the spelling McGoogan, there are so many! Has been a challenge to find them sometimes.
I have not met any of the McGoogans but I have met some of the Harvey's (my granddad's side). My mum and sister remember Rachel though.
I would be delighted to find out we are related.

Hi, Deb!
Have you been to Ireland? I have been twice, once 40 years ago and again three years ago. I found them to be the warmest, friendlist people I have ever met.
So McGoogan was Rachel's married name? And she was married to James McGoogan? Did Andrew and Mary and the whole family emigrate to the US?
It is interesting how first names travel down Irish families. I understand the first son is named after the father's father. The second son is named after the mother's father. If there is a third son, he is named after an uncle. The same then for the daughters. It was that way with my grandfather's family.Have you looked at Griffin's Evaluation? I did find a John McGoogan there but I don't kknow if he is my John McGoogan. Do you live in Vancouver?
Take care!

Hi Lynn.
I have not been to Ireland. I am in contact with a few distant cousins in the Bushmills area and we correspond a couple of times a year. I also correspond with members of the Taylor and Kane families.
My GGM Rachel married Robert Harvey.
Andrew McGoogan (b1786) was from Dumfries Scotland. I do know that some of my GGM Rachel's brothers went back and forth to Scotland to work in the mines.
I do not live in Vancouver I am in Nanaimo.
Where are you?

Hi, Deb!
I am in St. Louis, Mo. I'm sorry, where is Bushmills? I have friends in Montreal and have visited there and loved it. Interesting. Ancestry changed my ethnic background from 87% Irish to 67% Irish and 20% Scottish.. Given that Antrim is so close to Scotland, I was not surprised. From the Canadian 1851 census, John McGoogan was not Catholic, but Mary was.
About 15 years ago, I received a phone call from a Maureen McGoogan from England. She was married to a Len McGoogan who had emigrated to England from Antrim many years before. One of his brothers, Ivan, had gone to Boston instead of England. They were in contact with him for several years but he wrote to tell him he was leaving Boston for Chicago and would write with his new address when he arrived. They never heard from him again. They had been looking for him for years. Now with the internet they found my name and number. The mother was not in good health andd wanted to know what happened to her son. It was like I was on a quest! Between Marueen and myself, we found him in Tacoma, Wa. Again, given the rarity of the name and being both from Antrim, we thought it was very possible we were related. A very kind sheriff in Tacoma had given Ivan my phone number. I will never forget the night I received a phone call from a man with an accent and it was Ivan. I know there was another brother named Eddie.
Take care!
