John Hughes would have been my 4x great grandfather. His birth location in Ireland is not known nor is his wife's name.  I've only identified three sons:  My 3x great grandfather Thomas Hughes born 1781, John Hughes 1782 and Joseph 1794.  With such a large gap between John and Joseph, there would have been other sons and daughters born before the family emigrated from Ireland about 1820.

The estimate of 1755 for birth year of John Hughes, AKA "Gunner", is based on comment that he was very old at the time of his petition for change of land. From microfilm C-2050, images 589-590: on 3 Dec 1821, John Hughes, late gunner of Royal Corps of Artillery had originally been granted SW 1/2 Lot 10 Conc 9 of Bathurst Twp. Because of the deep snow, it was hard to tell that this was very bad land, composed of rock from front to back, and with timber mainly Hemlock, little hardwood. He had a very large family and was unable to support them on that land, so he successfully petitioned 16 Dec 1825 to obtain SW 1/2 Lot 15 Conc 11 of South Sherbrooke Twp. By 11 Sept 1840, John had completed all the settlement duties and received the deed to the property.  Joseph and his family were already on that land in the 1852 census and I have been unable to find John anywhere nearby.  That land passed to Joseph Hughes in John's WILL 11 Sept 1854, which means that John's wife was also dead.  Considering the time lag to probate the Will, Gunner John Hughes likely died about 2 years earlier, but before the 1852 census. With no cemetery yet opened in the immediate area, John was probably buried on the South Sherbrooke land.
