John is in our family tree. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Lancaster (b. 18 May 1832). We have the same story as you re: Civil War then vanished! I believe his brother-in-law was Ebenezer Lancaster who died in TN in the war hospital in 1863. Legend has it they signed up together. I did not know he became a citizen. :)

We know his father was William and his mother was Mary. He had brothers Alexander, Michael and Stuart. He had sisters Mary and Ann. He was married in the USA in PA in 1848. He was born in 1824. I would like to find a brth record for John or any one of his siblings. They lived in Clegnah, Mosside, Antrim.
He became a citizen of the USA. I have a copy of the affidavit by his mother in law's brother. He fought in our Civil War and disappeared. Returned to Ireland? His brother in law and brother Michael were killed in the Civil War.
