John Broder was born in Youghal about 1798-1801 (depending on which Wales census you believe). In Youghal in 1834 he married Ellen Geary, and in 1835 and 1836 were born their daughter Mary and son Thomas. By 1839 they had emigrated to Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, where 4 subsequent children were born -- and where their name evolved to Broderick. Abergavenny had a thriving iron industry, which eventually brought 2 of the Broderick children to Pittsburgh in the U.S., where there was a strong job market for skilled ironworkers. Son John, born in 1842, emigrated in 1865 to take a job as a "puddler", who determined when a batch was ready to pour. A couple of years later his sister Anne came as well when her husband took a similar position in the same city. Although it is unlikely that either of the siblings ever set foot on Irish soil, both identified themselves as Irish in their own children's baptismal records in the U.S. Parents John and Ellen both died in Llanfoist in the Abergavenny area, in 1871 and 1886 respectively.
