  • I have a lot of Breslin cousins and they are all from Donegal and immigrated to Schuylkill county Pennsylvania. My family were the Sharpe's, Gallagher's ,Hogan's  and Conways. Hannah Sharpe married John B Breslin(dob-1862 PA) she is my great aunt. I have been to Schuylkill County Pennsylvania twice in my life and I do not live far from there. But I've got to go and do more research., when the coast  is clear".   Lisa

  • John B Breslin's father was John Breslin born SW Donegal in 1833. His father was Charles Breslin b 1795. Charles emigrated with his whol family to Mauck Chunk PA between 1837 and 1850. Two other families from the same area migrated to Schuylkill county around the same time. My GGrandfather John Breslin b 1820 in Ardar Donegal, Bernard Breslin b1816, Charles Breslin b 1828, Cornelius Breslin b 1830, maty Breslin b 1835 (Married James Kanr in 1854 in Tremont Schuylkill co.) All originally settled in or near Minersville. Their parents are yet to be discovered but did not migrate. A third Breslin family including Charles Breslin 1826, John Giles Breslin, High Breslin, Michael Breslin and perhaps another also settled initially in Minersvill but later move around. their parents were John Breslin c/a 1800 and Bridget Boyle. I have DNA evidence that the last two families were related and I'm 99% sure your family was also related.

  • My great, great grandparents were James Gillespie and Bridget Breslin who came to Minersville, PA and were on the 1850 census with their sons Patrik (born in Ireland around 1845) and Denis (born in Minersville). They later moved not far to Port Carbon and Palo Alto, PA and had Charles, Mary Ellen and Bridget. Their parish was St. Stephen's. Their godparents are names that are very familiar to southwest Donegal from the pre famine time like more Gillespie, Lyons, Haughey, Diver and Gara.

I'd guess that youmight be related to the John Breslin Bridget Boyle line who wmigrated to the minersville area. John Breslin 52 on ancestry has extensive info on this branch. I believe hisGGrandparents were cousins of mine as we share DNA. Have you taken DNA test? If so what site. I'll look and see if we share any DNA

Bridget Breslin Gillespie's, (my great, great grandmother) father's name was Denis Breslin. This was stated on her death certificate by her daughter. Her second son was named Denis, therefore I believe this information is accurate because of Irish naming patterns. I do not know where they came from in Ireland. Based on family names and godparents in the U.S. in 1850 to 1860, I believe they came from Donegal and most likely southwest. I wish I had hard evidence of where exactly.

In the 1840 road work they mention as a landmark the home of Denis Breslan of Strabin along with Francis McCloskey of Fyfannon and Patrick Cunningham of Killybegs. I am wondering if this could be Bridget's father. There are Gillespie in the area.

  • There was a Dennis Brisland in Carrowkell townland, Upper Moville parish Donegal in the 1828 Tithe Applotment Books. Patrick, John and Hugh Brisland also lived there. I searched many of the various Breslin spellings and that's the only one that showed a Dennis but ther is no way of knowing if he's the right one.

Yes Gil. I saw that. Thank you.  I was trying to find info closer to right before they left Ireland during the famine. The road work logs show many Breslin and Gillespie families living in southwest donegal. I focused on Denis and D. Breslin but wrote down all Breslin families listed. Many were outside of Ardara. I looked to see where Gillespie and Breslin overlap to see if I can pinpoint where my great, great grandparents met. That might tell me where they were from. Sheer speculation though. It is fun and I am learning so much about that time in Ireland. I hope to visit that area one day.

I also looked at carbon county, Pennsylvania and many Breslin families settled there in the 1800s.
