Back to List

James Jess emmigrated to Van Diemans Land in 1836 as part of a Bounty Scheme set up to encourage young women and able married men to work in the colony of Australia.  They left Southhampton on board the William Metcalf and arrived in Hobart Town in January 1837 with two young sons.  Their application was approved by the Rev. Otway John Herbert of St. Anne's Shandon, Cork.  The application says that James lived in Lace Lane Cork.  I cannot find that street in any old maps of Cork.  James is a Cooper.  Both James and his wife were born in Cork, baptised at St. Finbbar's Cathedral.  Catherine Lyons lived in Bandon Road Cork at birth.  I am trying to find out about their lives in Cork before they decided to emmigrate to Australia.  Any hints about further researching hints would be most appreciated.
