George Brownlee was born 1756 in County Antrim. He emigrated with his father, James, and extended family to Charleston, South Carolina in 1768. They settled in the area of Abbeville, SC in 1771. In about 1778 he married Sarah Caldwell and they had eight children: John, George Jr., Elizabeth, Jane, Eleanor, Sarah, Isabella and Martha.
