Francis McLoughlin was the child to Thomas McLoughin and probably Elizabeth Hamilton. Francis likely grew up in the townland Laghty, in the Manorhamilton Roman Catholic Parish which shares the same borders with Cloonclare Civil Parish. Family lore through many generations shared that Francis McLoughin’s mother was Elizabeth Hamilton. She was of privilege and position. Francis’ father, Thomas McLoughlin, was an Irish Catholic estate gardener, probably on the Tottenham Estate in the Glenfarne area of Leitrim. The Hamiltons did not accept the match and they disowned their daughter. She educated her son in mathematics, reading, writing, and the classics. His signature on his naturalization record was penned very neatly, and the U.S. census recorded that he could read and write.
Franics emigrated to Boston's North End circa 1850. He married Ann Doherty of Castlerea, County Roscommon in the North End of Boston where they had ten children and both lived for the rest of their lives.
