Edward Pemberton-Leach was born in Derry on the 2nd of April 1847. He received his education in London.
As a young man, Pemberton-Leach enlisted in the British military forces. When he was 31 years old, he served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. On the 17th of March 1879, he was stationed Maidanah when he was involved in action. During the battle he was tasked with covering a regiment who were transporting a mortally wounded lieutenant. He charged forwards, killing a large number of the enemy forces. He received a wound to the arm but srvived the day.
For his bravery on that day, Edward Pemberton-Leach was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross. He was also promoted to the rank of Commander, and later to Major-General.
Edward Pemberton-Leach died on the 27th of April 1913 in Italy.
