Dennis C. Higgins was born in Ireland* in about 1800. His parents were John Higgins and Ann Dillon.
By 1826 he had emigrated to the USA and by 1829 was living in Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. There on July 23, 1829 he was married to Eliza Trainor / Traynor [one source gives her surname as "Farmer,"] who was born in New York, USA. She was the daughter of Michael Trainor and Margaret Clement.
By 1830, the Dennis C. Higgins family was living in Missouri where their first child, John was born.
By the time of the 1850 US census the Higgins was living in St. Louis, Missouri, and had the following children:
John, age 20, Michael, age 18, Margaret, age 15, Dennis, Jr, age 13, Francis, age 8, Anna, age 6 and Eliza, age 3.
By 1870 the family was still living in Missouri, where Dennis C. Higgins was listed as a retired farmer with his wife, Lisa. Two more children had been added to the family: Charles and William Higgins.
