Catharine (Kate) May 1842

Back to List

Kate was born in Athboy, in the two-story house on the right in the photo.

In the late 1860s she emigrated with her husband John Russell and son Patrick to the United States.

Her son Christopher had died in Ireland. John and Kate went on to have more children in the area near St. Louis, Missouri, where John was a farmer. John died in 1883, just three years after the birth of their youngest child. Her two youngest daughters married a pair of brothers.

Kate died by drowning. It is uncertain whether this was deliberate. She was found in River des Peres near the Gravois Street bridge in St. Louis, having gone missing from her son's home.

  • Hi Glynn. While Catherine did have siblings, none were named James that I have found, and all were born in Co. Meath. Have you tried subscribing to rootsireland.ie? I had a subscription for a couple of months there, and it was so worth it! None of the other sources (including the National Library of Ireland) had the records from Kildalkey, where her father Patrick and his brothers were born. Their search engine is also the best. It will let you focus on a county--in your case Mayo, which is a main centre for May(e)s. Put in your date range and the father's name that you have, and if there are extant records, you will find what you are looking for. I let my subscription lapse because I pretty much reached the end of the records. Even the genealogists at the National Library couldn't find more.  Best of luck!
