He was the son of another Bartholomew McNaghten; and brother of John McNaghten, who later became known as "1/2 hanged McNaghten".
He married Charlotte Given/Giveen in Coleraine in 1769; and had many children who were nearly all baptised in Coleraine. One of these
children was Mary Jane McNaghten/M'Naghtan/McNaughton, (many different spelling variants for this family) who emigrated with her husband,
Peter Pegus, to Australia in 1829. Peter Pegus retired as an Army Captain with the Connaught Rangers (88th light foot regiment) in 1828.
Peter Pegus and Mary Jane received their marriage licence from St. Mary's Church, Dublin in 1805.
